While traversing South New Zealand, we stopped to take in a particular
view. These huge fellas were waiting for us. Hungry and masters of,
what can only be dubbed, agressive begging they posed happily for
photos and then required us to pay the toll. When we declined they
started eating our camper van. A brief business meeting between our
representatives drew the conclusion that two biscuits per bird was an
agreeable rate. Unhappy about supporting such piracy we threw one
chocolait hobnob out of the window as a distraction and quickly drove
off. I am possibly on an avian hit list in parts of NZ even now, ‘Peck
on sight!’
