EDC UK">Kiya custom folder and Spiderco EDC UK

June 15, 2009  |  General

A little Kiya knife I picked up in Tokyo Japan alongside some serious chefs knives. Similar to an Opinel in blade style and sharp as a razor (sharpened in store). Cost about £20, but Japan is a little too far to go for an EDC! They had 4 models, the top one was a custom special steel and out of my current price range.

This one has a simple wooden handle and a simple slip movement. Here it is next to my Spiderco UK, which I carry when I don’t have my Leatherman. (Lanyard my own design).

Its smooth, classy, body will mean that it is my “Black Tie” knife, for when the Spiderco would raise an eyebrow.

BTW I also have a SOG Micron and the handle fails –spits– during hard work. Not what I expect from a SOG, which is usually my choice when teaching/learning knife defence.

to be honest as far as i know the only difference is the colour anyway... i must admit though with mine i got some sandpaper and took off the trademarks and the silly shark face.

Well, back then the sharkie was all there was! I have had it for a long time.

dude... a quick question? why did you go for a sharkie instead of the pocket shark?
  • I like the bug, but it really is too small! The length of the blade of the Kiya is exactly 3 inches.

For personal defence I have a Coldsteel Sharkie Pen.

Hope to hear from ye soon

nice looking knife dude.... question though... is it a uk legal edc? blade looks a little big in my mind to be under 3 inch?

btw i mostly carry 2 tools every day now... a spiderco bug (inch cutting edge, sodding sharp, good slip joint, and only cost about 6 quid. ive also taken to carrying a coldsteel pocket shark.. which sounds aggressive but is actually a simple marker pen that has been over engineered to be capable as an emergency window breaker, wedge, lever, or short range impact tool.... can also be used as a Yawara stick.
