These nets, raised and lowered 100 times a day, are supposedly from
the time of the mongols. Either way they work and Cesca and I had fun
joining the four man crew in pulling the net out of the water. The
catch: one puffer fish, aparently thanks to the boxing day tsunami.

in devon, they have a word they use locally a lot.. ” grockle “. they apply it to people who walk around gazing at things, occasionally stopping for no reason and pointing at things that have been there for years and that no local person really notices anymore.…
but although the locals actually despise these grokles, they encourage them for the one part of them that they find facinating…
their wallet.
I know all about “Grockles” as my family all hail from Brixham. I can tell you that the relationship between these people and the locals is more complicated than you claim. Devon people know that the area requires tourists to survive and indeed many of the businesses are setup only to facilitate the tourist trade. Moreover, Devonshire people are justifiably proud of their home and its beauty and very happy with tourists who “get it”.
“Grockles” are that sort of tourist that are hollow and cares little for the area or the people. “Day trippers” and people on “tours” fill up the place to its brim, in the summer, and many locals find this annoying.
They have nothing in common with us. For a start we are not “monied”. We are not tourists, but travelers and we are not part of the summer-influx. In posting images like this I have two motivations:
1. It’s a nice picture isn’t it — the iPhone does take very good images given it has only a 2mp camera!
2. It shows, for those who will never visit there — presumably this includes Mr. Durden — how beautiful it is. These are working fishing nets, some of the oldest in the world. A picture of such has its own value.
several years ago me and my partner tried to move to devon namely brixham we got as far as renting a flat there because we fell in love with the place we were once grockles, it was something we wanted to do for years, we loved the people and the coast line very different from our native essex sadly my partner found work straight away but i struggled badly i can understand devonshire people being proud of there county, its a shame that most of the work down there is seasonal all an all i sit here dreaming of one day returning there to the beautiful place i once called home so any offers of employment would be gratefully received lol!!
