A little taste of home

A little taste of home, originally uploaded by James & Cesca.

After six months of foreign food and drink we finally rebel. On our
first night in Bangkok we find a little taste of home. Irish pubs here
may be as authentic as those in London but they serve pints and pies
and if not for the heat and the Thai girls in rubber hotpants I could
swear I was in The Angel!

Junk boats at dusk

Junk boats at dusk, originally uploaded by James & Cesca.

Halong Bay, Vietnam is the most stunning place to see from the bow of
a junk boat. This UNESCO site hides stunning, cavernous limestone
caves beneath the numerous casts and awesome views from above. Still
very beautiful in overcast weather.

3 days 2 nights saw us kayaking, cycling through villages, trekking
and sleeping both on the water and an island too. We paid $99e with
APT Travel, the least in our group, for those looking to go.

Hanoi New Year

Hanoi New Year, originally uploaded by James & Cesca.

At midnight on the 25th January the city of Hanoi celebrates Tet (the
Vietnamese New Year) with a massive fireworks display over the Old
Quarter lake. Together with untold numbers of locals chearing and
clapping we get cricked necks watching the sky explode for 15 minutes.

“Chuc Mung Nam Moi!”, originally uploaded by James & Cesca.

Nestled above the New Year Chaos of Hanoi we find a café called Potato
that resembles a high end ski resort. A Jamaican coffee later and we
are ready to join the thousands gathered to watch the fireworks that
mark Tet. A strange mixture of New Year’s and everyone’s birthday
(it’s a communist thing that EVERYONE has the same birthday), Tet is
one hell of a party!

Welcome to the year of the buffalo!

Crossing the road in Hanoi

Crossing the road in Hanoi, originally uploaded by James & Cesca.

Crossing such a road as this, which never relents for a second, is an act of pure will. If one can step out casually onto the morass then they will all pass around you like salmon. Try and run or dodge and you will get mowed down!
