29 today!

Yes, tomorrow - that endless ever ahead tomorrow that is suddenly upon me like a bailiff at the door 3am on a Sunday morning- I turn 30.

But not today!  Today I am still 29 and in celebration of this fact and to signify the passing winds of change, today I shout my barbaric yalp from the rooftops of the world!

After today, perhaps, it is time for a more sober reflection (fat chance), but for now let us create a pile to investigate.  Let us ask, “What did James do in his 20’s?”

  1. Married the lovely Francesca.
  2. Passed his black belt in TKD.
  3. Completed his Degree in Philosophy.
  4. Mastered the art of airsoft.
  5. Built his career in IT from nothing to CITP.
  6. Learned to write.
  7. Took up and fell in love with Fencing.
  8. Traveled a lot.
  9. Skied Mont Fort and then for after’s did the even more hardcore; Tortin
  10. Learned to Salsa (badly), speak Italian (like a 4 year old), and SCUBA.

A nice top ten, but - and the main philosophy should come next week - can one really make a list like this?

A list implies completion.  These events are in the past, inaccessible, an unrecoverable country.  Life, on the other hand, is constantly moving forwards; an ever expanding and marching ‘now’.

For example, marriage is not a ‘one day’ event; it is a lifestyle, a state of mind and something to work on & polish (hense the ‘cherish’ line in the ceremony). TKD black belt is the end of one road and the start of another even longer path. Philosophy is not something you do, you become a philosopher.  Airsoft takes constant practice and refinement.  We all know to continue striving at work, right?  My writing will get better (I promise!).  I definitely have a long way to go with fencing. Travel is habit forming and as for skiing, well, I hope to next try the secret black off the back of Mont Fort.

So, I don’t see this as a full stop in the story, only a comma.  10,20,30… Our obsession with decimals; bah! The Romans have so much to answer for!

See you on the flip side.
