Have my prayers finally been answered? Which prayer? The one about finding the perfect face protection for airsoft of course!
Like my hunt for the perfect Walkman headphones (Sennheiser mx500’s) I have bought and tried almost everything. In fact so far I have tried and rated the following:
1. Sansei SG5

This mask is fantastic and I used it for many months. It can take full auto to the face and cannot fog up as it uses mesh over the eyes. However, it has a few serious problems. The first is that it has terrible peripheral vision and it is quite possible to get flanked without seeing your opponent. Secondly, you do loose a little front vision due to the mesh, not much, but a little. Thirdly, the retaining strap is pants. I have seen them break in battle and cause mayhem as people try to stop the game whilst under fire.
2. Sansei Deluxe

The big brother of the SG5 has better peripheral vision but still the same crap strap and even worse it is too heavy for many manouvers. I felt that it could come off at any moment.
3. Bolle 800’s

These are the goggles of choice by my good friend Trip. He swears by them. I, on the other hand, spent most of the time swearing at them. Great kit but fogs up too quick. If you are a big fellow like me then you will sweat too much for these.
3. Wiley SG1 Tacticals

These are the crème of the crème. Or so I thought. I had read how marines in Iraq had been hit by shrapnel only to have these babies block the blast and save his eyes. WOW! Then I read that these don’t fog because they are tight to your face. I like the idea of special ops kit and playing up to the people on the forums who are total gerdo’s. However, first game out they get SHOT OFF MY FACE. Yes, whilst the glass is bullet proof, the plastic is not even BB proof! Cue some glue and tape and they are fine (and improved as I tested them against my 300fps mp5 and the join held). Then at AG-05, in the heat of battle against many enemies and especially in my one on one duel against Ghost_Rider, they steam up. Badly, very badly. I cannot use them at all in heat.
So, where to go from here? I was adrift and lost with nobody to help. Did I buy goggles with fans? Go back to a Sansei? Then finally, the light appeared.
Ladies and Gents, I present my custom built BB-Toyz FroggGoggs!

With better vision than the default sansei, no lenses to steam up and a REAL BLOODY STRAP! I am holding great hope that these will do the mustard when in battle. Will they hold up? Watch this space as my AEG comes back from the engineers tonight and I will be popping a few BB’s into them and I will be wearing them next skirmish.
Until then at £15 quid (!) I consider them excellent value! I will be using them alongside my Neoprene face mask at electrowerks and will let you know!
