This is an entry for my nephew; Mathew.
Dear Mathew,
One of the best places to get games on the internet is the home of old games: The Underdogs. There they have many old games that are totally free to download. They can be a little tricky to get fully going on a modern XP computer, but they should all work. I did a quick search for you and found:
Adventure Construction kit
3D Construction kit I used to play this one!
3D Construction Kit 2
BBC Garderners World designer
Adventures in Math
They also have educational games such as Professor Hawkins: A Brief History of Time and the Brilliant Last Chance to See That was written by Douglas Adams (a writer Grandad Bell loves very much).
**Remember that you can only download one game at a time on the Underdogs website. If you try and download two at once they will ban you. So finish getting one before you get another**
If you want something more modern try The Games Factory which is free for 30 days and about £20 after that. Or perhaps try Click And Play : for schools
I hope these help, please feel free to leave a comment here or email me if you want more.
Love
Uncle James
